15 Essential Songs for Your Carpool Karaoke Playlist

15 Essential Songs for Your Carpool Karaoke Playlist

Here’s the thing: Some people really, truly enjoy driving to and from work. It’s a comfort to be in control of your own vehicle through the morning commute.

Still, if you’re a solo driver, you have to put up with traffic that can wreak havoc on your schedule, not to mention your stress levels. You also need to pay for gas, recurrent maintenance on your vehicle, and parking—costs which can add up quickly.

This is why carpool is a perfect alternative. You can have all the perks of driving a car, plus the bonus of having enough bodies in the vehicle for the HOV lane (saving you time and stress). You also share the driving responsibility (saving you gas and wear-n-tear on your car), and you can be dropped off/picked up where you choose (saving you parking costs).

But these aren’t the only benefits of carpooling. As anyone who rides regularly in a carpool knows, the time you spend on the road with your carpool buddies can be rewarding moments of conversation, connection, and humor. And as any fan of James Corden’s The Late Late Show knows, riding in the car can turn any carpool into an epic karaoke session:

It isn’t always easy to match the right songs with the right carpool, however—so to make things easier, we’ve compiled a brief list of starter karaoke tunes for the new pool, the veteran pool, and anyone’s Friday drive.

For the New Pool

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

This is a karaoke classic that can also inspire carpool solidarity. It’s the perfect tune for the carpool that’s just started and is ready to have fun.

Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond

Don’t judge your carpool buddies too harshly if they insist on singing (or refuse to sing) the nonexistent “Ba! Ba! Ba!” in the chorus.

All Star by Smash Mouth

Here’s a throwback to 1999 that most everyone in your carpool can probably still recite word for word. And even if they can’t, they can at least bang their head along.

Something from Disney

Your carpool buddies may not want to admit it, but they probably have the lyrics to “Let It Go” memorized.

For the Veteran Pool

The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens

Since you and your carpool buddies have been doing this ride for a while, you can handle this one in parts. After all, someone has to carry the “a-weema-wehs” through.

Lean on Me by Bill Withers

You’ve built a strong rapport with each other through your rush hour trips, so this one is fully appropriate for the veteran carpool.

Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey

Here’s another classic that’s easy for anyone in your carpool to sing along to. You can even split it into guy/gal parts if you’re feeling the groove.

Africa by Toto

There’s nothing quite like seeing a car full of commuters cruising in the HOV lane blessing the rains down in Africa.

For Friday’s Drive

Final Countdown by Europe

Everyone in your carpool may be feeling it at the end of the week, so this tune’s just a reminder that the end is in sight.

I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers

Bonus points to anyone in your carpool who can harmonize to this one—or who can sing it with the original Scottish accent.

Shake It Off by Taylor Swift

Say what you will—haters gonna hate—but this upbeat chart-topper is great for shakin’ off the week.

Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars

Here’s a tune to get anyone in your carpool pumped for Friday night jammin’. (Don’t believe me? Just watch.)

Bonus Tracks: For the Pool Up for the Challenge

One Week by Barenaked Ladies

The challenge here lies in remembering all the lyrics—but if you can pull it off, this is one of the best carpool karaoke songs to master. (You still get credit if you start at “Chickity China the Chinese chicken.”)

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air by Will Smith

All someone has to do is drop the line “Now this is a story all about how…” and wait to see if anyone else in the carpool dares to pick it up from there.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Two words: “Galileo! Galileo!”
