Smart Commute’s 5th Annual TransForum Breakfast featured futurist Thomas Frey who will give us a glimpse into the driving forces behind these trends.

Over the past decade, Thomas Frey, Executive Director of DaVinci Institute in Westminster, CO, has built an enormous following based on his ability to develop accurate visions of the future and describe the opportunities ahead. Having started seventeen businesses himself and assisting on the development of hundreds more, the understanding he brings to his audiences serves as a rare blend of reality-based thinking coupled with a clear-headed visualization of the world ahead. Predicting the future has little value without understanding the driving forces behind the trends, subtle nuances that can be leveraged, and implications for both the people directly affected in the industry as well as others farther down the technological food chain.

Before launching DaVinci Insitute, Tom spent 15 years at IBM as an engineer and designer where he received over 270 awards, more than any other IBM engineer.  He is also a past member of the Triple Nine Society.

Peter Muller, President, PRT Consulting

Mr. Muller is President of the Advanced Transit Association and has degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the universities of Cape Town and Colorado. He is a registered professional engineer and President of PRT Consulting, a company specializing in planning, engineering and procurement services related to automated transit networks (ATN). His interest in ATN began when, as Chairman of the Airport Consultants Council in 2000, he led an initiative to reinvent airports that found ATN could have a significant positive impact on the way airports are planned, built and operated. Since then he has discovered similar potential positive impacts on urban environments.

Jim Hanson, Atkins’ ITS/Traffic Engineering

Jim Hanson, PE, PTOE, is director of intelligent mobility for Atkins in North America. He has more than 20 years of experience in traffic engineering and shares the firm’s global best practices in intelligent mobility and advances in technology with clients he assists throughout the United States.  Jim has worked with a variety of local, state and federal agencies around Colorado, the United States and internationally and is well versed on the differing needs of various clients, stakeholders, and projects. He uses his broad range of experience to develop innovative and effective project solutions.  Prior to joining Atkins, Mr. Hanson was a municipal traffic engineer in California, and Colorado.

Will Kerns, Principal, Open Plan Consultants

Will Kerns, AICP of Open Plan Consultants, LLC has been contributing to Los Angeles based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) since 2015. Will’s job title interestingly is called Hyperleader of Global Planning and System Structure. Recently, Open Plan was contracted by HTT to coordinate a Feasibility Study for a commercial Hyperloop corridor in the United Arab Emirates. Will spent three months on-site in Abu Dhabi working with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport to usher in a new era of ultra-high speed transportation. Will is passionate about the need for humankind to undergo a transportation revolution and move toward less carbon intensive forms of mobility.

Mark Gruber, Town of Erie Trustee

After a thirty year career as a corporate controller and Chief Financial Officer Mr. Gruber thought he had retired to the quietude of Erie and its semi-rural environment which at that time had 12,000 residents.  Little did he know that retirement was but a pipe dream when he was first appointed to Erie’s Planning Commission in 2006.   Observing Erie’s growth direction he knew he could do more to help manage and plan that growth.  So in 2010 he ran for and was elected a Trustee of the Town, and for the past three years has served as the Board of Trustees Mayor Pro Tem.  Since then he has continually transitioned his focus on the big issues for this fast growing municipality.  First there was getting the economic development ball rolling which finally showing results with last years King Soopers Market Place opening on state highway 7.  Then there was learning all he could about oil & gas development in the state and concurrently schooling him at the states environmental science labs about potential industry impacts.  As the O & G issue temporarily quieted he immersed himself in regional transportation issues.  For two years he served on the Denver Regional Council of Governments Board and has represented Erie for the past three years at the North Area Transportation Alliance, The North I-25 Coalition, The Mayors and County Commissioners Highway 36 Coalition and the Highway 7 Coalition.  He also sits in for Mayor Tina Harris at the Metro Mayors Caucus and is the town’s representative to the Colorado Municipal Leagues Legislative Policy Committee.


He points to his daily bicycling addiction in Erie’s still semi-rural environs as his best time to ponder and develop new ideas for the issues that challenge municipal elected leaders.
